US blames North Korea for WannaCry. It's The Daily Crunch.

North Korea officially blamed for WannaCry, Echo Spot reviewed and France sets a deadline for WhatsApp and Facebook. All that and more in The Daily Crunch for December 19, 2017.

1. U.S. officially points the finger at North Korea for WannaCry

The U.S. government has officially put the blame on North Korea for the WannaCry ransom attack that hit a large number of victims this past May. It's not like we didn't already suspect the rogue nation, but this makes it official.

This placing of blame means more official sanctions and measures can be taken to prevent this kind of thing from happening again.

2. Echo Spot hits the spot

Amazon's funny little circle friend has bowled over Brian, and he declares it his favorite Alexa gadget – despite its camera, which is skeeving out a bunch of people, since this little speaker with a displays otherwise perfect for the bedside table.

3. France insists WhatsApp stop sharing data with Facebook

Good. They get enough signals as it is, without roping in WhatsApp messages. They're not going to stop being creepy on their own.

4. Waymo enlists startup for passenger insurance

Driverless service fleets will mean a whole new ecosystem for startup opportunities – provided they eventually reach a scale that makes carving out sub businesses like insurance truly viable.

5. People really wanted Amazon Prime Video for Apple TV

Amazon Prime Video is finally on Apple TV, and people were here for it. Big time.

6. ZTE's dual-screen abomination

This phone is like a crazy nightmare prop from an episode of Black Mirror. Luckily, it doesn't sound like the experiment will ultimately prove a success anyway.

7. Final Fantasy turns 30

Devin has a great look back at a stories franchise beloved by many. Even if you're not personally an FF fan, it's worth taking a look to find out why so many are.
