Magic Leap reveals some wacky stuff, Apple said to be unifying iOS and Mac apps and Pokémon is launching a big AR update. All that and more in The Daily Crunch for December 20, 2017. 1. Magic Leap reveals some actual hardware What does $2 billion worth of stealth development get you? This, I guess. Magic Leap has revealed its One Creator's Edition package, which includes the Lightwear headset. Looks like something a few people will buy and almost no one will use! This is as good a capper as any to this round of AR/VR hype. 2. Apple said to be combining iOS and Mac apps next year Apple could be gearing up to combine its iOS and Mac App Stores into one unified software platform for third-party apps. That would go a long way towards helping with an eventual shift to Mac hardware based on Apple's in-house ARM chips. 3. Pokémon Go adopts Apple's ARKit for better virtual cute things Pokémon Go is getting its ARKit update later this week, and it offers more than just realistically anchored Pokémon overlaid on the real world. You can also now find Pokemon in the tall grass overlaid on the world seen through your camera. Sounds like a cool update. 4. Falcon Heavy gets ready to roll With any luck, 2018 is going to start off with a bang – courtesy of SpaceX's Falcon Heavy rocket, which combines THREE Falcon 9 booster cores into one giant, heavy haul rocket. It's set up at Cape Canaveral now, and is getting ready for a January target first launch. 5. Uber gets defined as a transport service by EU's top court Uber's longstanding approach of claiming it's a technology company, not a transport company, has hit a major snag: The EU's top court has said it is in fact a transport service. That means playing by a lot more rules if it wants to continue to expand through Europe. 6. Coinbase now has a marketplace for Bitcoin Cash Okay... that's... good? I still don't understand anything about crypto. But Coinbase did also halt trading of Bitcoin Cash pretty much right after it started allowing it. 7. Stitch Fix stock price hits a snag An IPO that seemed to be doing fairly well has run into a major speed bump, after revealing its first quarter earnings statement. Also, check out the TechCrunch Gift Guide for 2017. If you order stuff from Amazon it often still ships in time, which is good news for me, specifically. |
