Uber's rep suffers another huge blow, Facebook is trying to improve its ever-worsening everything, and Toyota charts a path to full electrification. All that and more in The Daily Crunch for December 18, 2017. 1. Uber's spy games exposed Uber can't start rebuilding its reputation properly until we sound out bottom for the company – which doesn't really seem like it's going to happen soon, based on its track record. The latest revelation is that Uber was running illegal corporate espionage opps, as alleged by the company's own former head of global intelligence. Morale must be taking a hit over at the ride co. 2. Facebook is going to start penalizing obvious clickbait titles I feel like it already did this but now it's cracking down on stuff like "share to win a free trip" or "Like if..." type clickbait in posts. Also though, worth another reminder that Facebook is bad and no one should use it. 3. Toyota is going all-in on electric, finally Toyota has been criticized for lagging behind some of its automaker industry peers when it comes to its electrification strategy, but now it's set a target of offering either fully electric or hybrid versions of its entire vehicle lineup by 2025. It's also aiming to sell more than 10 purely electric car models by 2020, starting in China. 4. NIO launches all-electric SUV This could be one reason why Toyota decided to step up its electric strategy: Startup NIO just launched its first production car, a fully electric SUV with three rows of seating, 220 miles of range and the ability to swap out the battery quickly for a 3-minute full 'tank.' 5. Twitter starts enforcing its new rules today Twitter might become a friendlier place starting today – it's enforcing in earnest its new rules around violence and hate. But it might not, also, because it's a tangled, evil web of nightmare fuel that's going to be very tricky to un-knot. 6. Meet TechCrunch's newest (and best) podcast It's called CTRL+T, and it's hosted by Megan Rose Dickey and Henry Pickavet. The first episode is funny, smart and delightful – plus, it features an interview with Shonda Rhimes. Even though I host one of our other podcasts this one is clearly the best. Listen. 7. The 'Yo' guy on ICO sales The guy from Yo is calling out myths in the ICO space. This is far too tech, and it makes me want to shut everything down right now. Go find a forest – then live there. I'll meet you after I ship this newsletter. Also, check out the TechCrunch Gift Guide for 2017. There's only a week left, it's true, but you can still do it. You got this. |
