Tech faces Russia probe. It's The Daily Crunch.

THE DAILY CRUNCH
WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 1 2017 By Darrell Etherington

Facebook, Twitter and Google face off with Senate committee on Russian election influence. That and more for The Daily Crunch for November 1, 2017. Also it's time for Starbucks festive cups so get ready for some more frothy and highly inconsequential drama, too.

1. Tech giants face Senate Judiciary Hearing on Russia

Google, Facebook and Twitter all had to face tough questions from the Senate Judiciary Committee on Russian meddling in the election in day one of hearings, which continue today. It was a day that probably left Apple received they never could crack social media.

Today's proceedings seem a little more intent on taking the tech companies to task for their role in the Russian misinformation campaign. Ultimately, this is probably going to be bad for all of them.

2. Instagram sees 120,000 posts used by Russian election meddlers

Instagram has so far found 120,000 posts by Russian election attackers, with a total reach of 20 million Americans, per its general counsel Colin Stretch. That's a lot, and probably not even the full picture yet.

3. Amazon adds augmented reality feature to its iOS app

Amazon has a new AR view feature for its shopping app on iOS, letting you see what certain items will look like in your home before you buy. It's using Apple's ARkit, so it should be pretty good looking.

4. Quip raised $10 million for its electric toothbrushes

It may seem like a lot for something that's not particularly innovative, but investors are hungry for slightly innovative CPG deals after exits by things like Dollar Shave Club.

5. Virgin creates a separate company for government space contracts

Virgin's space launch wing will house its government and defines contracts under a separate entity called VOX Space. It's the only Virgin space brand to ditch the 'Virgin' name, and that' probably telling – Virgin wants to keep its fun private space peas and its potentially icky government and military space carrots totally distinct.

6. Sony brings Aibo back with a higher adorableness quotient

That's definitely a technically real term. Anyway, Aibo is back and it's got eye, which was actually part of the iconic appeal of the last one – its lack thereof, rather. Still cool that it's making a return.

7. CG celebs are nearly indistinguishable from the real variety

AI could soon make actors obsolete – perhaps the one job you may have thought was safe. It's okay if the robots take over this particular field, IMO.
