MoviePass is under investigation for securities fraud

More bad news for MoviePass, a big hire for Facebook and our hopes for Apple's next event. Here's your Daily Crunch for October 19, 2018.

1. MoviePass is under investigation for securities fraud in New York state

At the direction of New York Attorney General Barbara Underwood, MoviePass parent company Helios and Matheson is now the subject of a fraud probe in New York state.

"We've launched a securities fraud investigation into ⁦@MoviePass⁩' parent company," Underwood confirmed in a tweet. "My office is committed to protecting New York investors and the integrity of our financial markets."

2. Facebook hires former UK Lib Dem leader, Nick Clegg, as global policy chief

Facebook confirmed that Clegg's title will be VP, global affairs and communications, and that he starts on Monday. He'll be moving with his family to California in the new year.

4. Uber is developing an on-demand staffing business

According to a source close to Uber, the service dubbed Uber Works would provide waiters, security guards and other temporary staffers to business partners.

5. Vector speeds toward orbital launch capability with $70M in new funding

Vector aims to be the go-to launch platform for companies looking to put a bird in the air on short notice, and it plans to take its first payload into space early next year.

6. Jane VC, a new fund for female entrepreneurs, wants founders to cold email them

Send them your pitch — no wealthy or successful intermediary necessary.

7. Amazon says it will add 1,000 more employees in the UK, bringing the total to 28,500, bucking the Brexit chill

The government is positioning Amazon's news as a win at a time when many have been criticising how it has been handling Brexit negotiations.
