BMW unveils a personal voice assistant. It's The Daily Crunch.

THE DAILY CRUNCH
FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 7 2018 By Anthony Ha

BMW announces its own voice assistant, Twitter suspends Alex Jones and Infowars, and Whole Foods workers seek to unionize. Here's your Daily Crunch for September 7. 2018.

1. BMW launches a personal voice assistant for its cars

Once you are in a compatible car, you'll be able to control all of the standard in-car features by voice. Think navigation and climate control, or checking the tire pressure, oil level and other engine settings.

The announcement comes only a few weeks after BMW also launched its integration with Amazon's Alexa, but these are meant to be complementary technologies. BMW's own assistant is all about your car, while its partnerships with Amazon and also Microsoft enables other functions that aren't directly related to your driving experience.

2. Alex Jones and Infowars permanently suspended from Twitter and Periscope after new content violations

Twitter may have resolved an ongoing controversy over how it refused to completely shut down the accounts of Alex Jones and his online media site Infowars after a number of people complained about abusive content posted by both: it has finally banned the accounts, on Twitter and on its video platform Periscope.

3. Whole Foods workers seek to unionize, says Amazon is 'exploiting our dedication'

A group of workers at Whole Foods Market is leading an effort to establish a union for the Amazon-owned company's 85,000+ workforce.

4. Verizon declines to comment on WSJ report saying Tim Armstrong is in talks to leave Oath

Armstrong heads up the carrier's digital media and advertising division, Oath — which also happens to be TechCrunch's parent company.

5. Uber makes it easier to switch between rides, scooters, bikes and car rentals

With Mode Switch, the options for car rentals and bikes have become much more prominent. The idea is to further hook people into the Uber app by offering a variety of transportation options.

6. A top-tier app in Apple's Mac App Store will steal your browser history

At the time of publication, the rogue app — Adware Doctor — stood as the No.1 grossing paid app in the App Store's utilities category.

7. Meet the five Startup Battlefield finalists at Disrupt SF 2018

The finals competition will be live streamed on TechCrunch starting at 1:35pm Pacific today.
