A leak reveals the new iPhone XS. It's The Daily Crunch.

THE DAILY CRUNCH
FRIDAY, AUGUST 31 2018 By Anthony Ha

A leak reveals Apple's upcoming iPhone, Santa Monica gives the go-ahead to e-scooter startups and scientists make a scroll-like touch tablet. Here's your Daily Crunch for August 31, 2018.

1. Huge leak shows off the new iPhone XS

9to5Mac has gotten its hands on an image of Apple's next generation of iPhone hardware, and the future looks pretty swanky.

It appears that the company's flagship devices will have 5.8-inch and 6.5-inch screens, and will feature a new gold color shell. We'll learn more about the new devices (and a new Apple Watch) at the company's next press event, scheduled for September 12.

2. Santa Monica will allow Lime, Bird, Lyft and Jump to operate e-scooters

The city of Santa Monica has officially awarded Bird, Lime, Lyft and Jump Bikes (acquired by Uber in April) permits to operate both electric scooters and/or bikes in the city as part of its 16-month pilot program.

3. Scientists make a touch tablet that rolls and scrolls

Research scientists at Queen's University's Human Media Lab have built a prototype touchscreen device that's neither smartphone nor tablet but kind of both — and more besides. Dubbed the MagicScroll, the device is inspired by ancient papyrus/paper/parchment scrolls, so it takes a rolled-up, cylindrical form factor.

4. Firefox will soon start blocking trackers by default

That means the Firefox browser will soon automatically block all attempts at cross-site tracking. In fact, the features are already available in the Firefox Nightly release.

5. Chat app Line hopes its own crypto token can solve its user growth problem

Link — Line's token — isn't being minted through an ICO. Instead, it'll be given out to Line users as an incentive for using certain services, presumably to promote engagement.

6. To boost Amazon Pay in India, Amazon reportedly acquired Tapzo, an 'all-in-one' aggregator app, for $40M

The startup aggregates a number of services — such as Uber, Ola, food delivery services Swiggy and Zomato, Book My Show, bill payment service BillDesk and more — into a single app.

7. YouTube launches a suite of fundraising tools

The launch of YouTube Giving will allow creators to do more by making it easier for fans to donate to over 1 million nonprofits.
