Microsoft unveils the Surface Go. It's The Daily Crunch.

THE DAILY CRUNCH
TUESDAY, JULY 10 2018 By Anthony Ha

Microsoft announces a lower-end Surface tablet, Facebook tests AR ads and YouTube fights fake news. Here's your Daily Crunch for July 10, 2018.

1. This is Microsoft's $399 Surface Go

The Go represents the low end of the Surface line, sort of a halfway point between a convertible device and a standard tablet.

Spec sacrifices were made in order to hit the lower price point. Most notably, there's a smaller 10-inch display — but maybe that's a selling point for some users, particularly if you're not looking to do a lot of typing or office work.

2. Facebook is testing augmented reality ads in the News Feed

The company showed off ads that incorporate players' faces into Candy Crush gameplay footage, and other ads that allowed shoppers to see how virtual sunglasses and makeup would look on their own faces.

3. Snapchat debuts a library of selfie filters

This should help users scout out new face filters beyond the ones sitting in the oft-refreshed Lens Carousel.

4. YouTube is fighting fake news with $25M to promote journalism and more context in search results

In order to stem the spread of conspiracy theory videos and fake news on its platform, YouTube will be inserting context from trustworthy sources into search results about hot topics.

5. The crypto world's latest hack sees Israel's Bancor lose $23.5M

Bancor said in a statement that "a wallet used to upgrade some smart contracts was compromised." As a result, the attackers made off with $12.5 million in Ether, $1 million in Pundi X's NPXS token and $10 million in Bancor's BNT.

6. Google Pay rolls out support for peer-to-peer payments and mobile ticketing

Most of these updates were announced earlier this year — but now, Google says they're actually going live in the app.

7. Musk's mini sub "not practical" for Thai cave boys rescue

Apparently the head of the joint command center for the rescue operation told reporters, "Although [Musk's] technology is good and sophisticated it's not practical for this mission."
