THE DAILY CRUNCH
WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 21 2018 By Anthony Ha

Uber rolls out a new type of ride, AT&T announces 5G plans and Google launches automated ad placement. All that and more in The Daily Crunch for February 21, 2018.

1. Uber officially launches Uber Express POOL, a new twist on shared rides

Uber Express POOL is the company's latest experiment in optimizing shared rides. Express POOL will be the cheapest option, but you might have to wait a few extra minutes for a trip to start, walk a few blocks to a nearby pickup spot and/or walk a few blocks to your destination after you get dropped off.

Uber started testing the plan in San Francisco last fall.

2. AT&T names Atlanta, Dallas and Waco first of 12 US cities to get 5G wireless

The plan is to launch in a dozen cities by the end of the year, but the remaining cities will be announced at a later date.

3. 3D printing marketplace Shapeways names a new CEO

The company has been searching for a new chief executive for months to replace co-founder Peter Weijmarshausen, who stepped down in August.

4. This bizarre reality special from Netflix tries to get people to commit 'murder'

Don't do it, Chris!

5. Moovit raises another $50M led by Intel for its urban transit app, plans Mobileye collaboration

To date, Moovit has raised around $131 million in funding. When it raised its last round in 2015, it was valued at $450 million.

6. Google debuts AdSense 'auto ads' with machine learning to make placement and monetization choices

These aren't car commercials, but rather a new ad unit that uses machine learning to "read" a page to detect where ads might be appropriate and place them accordingly.

7. Adecco Group acquires recruiting startup Vettery for $100M

On Vettery, job candidates browse offers, schedule interviews with the employers that interest them and receive a signing bonus from Vettery when they take a job — all assisted by an on-staff "talent executive."
