Twitter's promising profitable quarter. It's The Daily Crunch.

THE DAILY CRUNCH
THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 8 2018 By Darrell Etherington

Twitter has a good fiscal quarter, Elon Musk promises coast-to-coast self-drive soon and Whole Foods becomes a little more Amazon. All that and more in The Daily Crunch for February 8, 2018.

1. Twitter is turning things around?

Twitter had a good quarter, and its stock price is reaping the rewards. Basically, the social media company is making money, which is what you want to do, when you're a for-profit enterprise.

User growth is still basically stalled, but income is income, and people like that in finance. I guess.

2. Elon Musk aims to do cross-country autonomous drive in 3-6 months

Musk said that he's probably going to be able to his Tesla autonomous cross-country demo drive in three months, or six months at the outside ("definitely," he said). Musk and time aren't always on the same page, of course, as proven by the fact that this drive was promised for last year. But we'll see.

3. Amazon starts shipping Whole Foods

Remember that Whole Foods isn't really Whole Foods anymore: It's Amazon's grocery arm. Forevermore.

4. Chinese police use smart glasses on the job

Chinese police are using smart glass to identify suspects on the go, in a pilot program which has resulted in the capture of at least 7 wanted individuals. Neat use of the tech, if a bit dystopian.

5. Spin is launching scooter sharing in addition to bikes

This is stupid. San Francisco loves these Razor-like scooters because it's a city populated by unreal people who don't understand life, but no one else wants this.

6. Polly wants a WordPress plugin?

Amazon's speech engine is coming to WordPress, which is good for companies that want to make their blog posts consumable on Alexa devices, for instance.

7. Apple's HomePod sells out of pre-order stock

The HomePod is not available for immediate pick-up or delivery, just a day ahead of its launch. I'm sure that means a lot of people bought the weirdly specifically niche speaker. Maybe.
