Equifax's breach to end all breaches, Facebook ponies up for Original Content, the best iPhone might not ship with the rest and more in The Daily Crunch for September 8, 2017. Happy day-after-half-of-all-Americans-impacted-by-a-data-security-issue day! 1. Equifax's big breach "Big" is an understatement when it comes to describing this breach: It affects some 143 million U.S. residents, which is nearly half the entire country's population. And data leaked includes Social Security numbers, birth dates, addresses and even driver's license numbers. It's hard to quantify just how screwed Equifax is here. Especially in light of news that some top execs at the company sold stock just before the news was made public. 2. Facebook set to spend up to $1 billion on original video next year The richest tech companies have so much money, and they want to spend it to acquire more money. That might be why Facebook is the latest to earmark a large chunk of cash for original video content, setting aside up to $1 billion for that purpose next year (the same budget Apple has reportedly set for 2018 original shows and movies). 3. Best new iPhone to ship after other new iPhones That fancy looking new iPhone with almost no bezels you've been seeing around? It's probably not shipping until October at least, as new reports suggest it'll take longer to get to market than the upgraded versions of the existing iPhone 7 and 7 Plus. Bummer. 4. Postmates broadens reach of Unlimited subscription Postmates has added a large new group of merchants to those eligible for its Unlimited subscription, all-you-can-order plan. There are over 250,000 new merchants on the platform in fact – every single merchant on the platform. 5. Canvas's self-driving warehouse cart makes its own way Canvas Technologies wants warehouse tech to move, including computer cars and conveyor belts. It's pretty cool stuff, and John paid them a visit in person to see how it all comes together. 6. Volvo acquires on-demand valet startup Luxe Volvo is beefing up its digital and mobility services with the acquisition of startup Luxe. It's an interesting bet, and Hertz was a strategic investor in the past, so maybe Luxe has something smart going after all. 7. Podcast Friday! New episodes of Equity, our VC-focused podcast, and Original Content, our rundown on all things streaming, are now available to listen to. You can also subscribe to both, which is a great idea for everyone who is smart. |
