Alphabet mulls $1B for Lyft. It's The Daily Crunch.

THE DAILY CRUNCH
FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 15 2017 By Darrell Etherington

Is Alphabet about to make a big bet on Uber's biggest rival? It looks like it. That and plenty more in The Daily Crunch for September 15, 2017.

1. Alphabet considers $1 billion Lyft investment

Alphabet could be gearing up to put a lot of money behind Uber's biggest rival: A new report suggests it's evaluating a $1 billion investment in the ride hailing company.

Lyft teaming up with Alphabet's Waymo could be a big win for both companies, especially now that Lyft is trying to encourage automakers to join its open autonomous driving network.

2. Future Chrome updates will allow permanent muting, blocking of autoplay videos

Google, if you're trying to make me love you, this is a good start: Future versions of Chrome will allow users to permanently mute certain sites, or block them from autoplaying video. End bad ads!

3. Didi now supports Apple Pay

China's Uber rival Didi Chuxing now supports Apple Pay for all of its ride sharing options, as well as for partner ofo's dockless bike share. That's a big win for Apple's ambitions in China.

4. Facebook puts an end to racist advertising categories

Users on Facebook's platform can create their own advertising profiles targeting certain demographic characteristics, and advertisers were using this to create categories like "How to burn jews" – really. FB ended the ones that were discovered, but it has to make bigger changes to prevent it from happening again.

5. Renault-Nissan plans to field robot ride-hailing service

Turns out GM and Ford aren't the only automakers looking at deploying an autonomous ride hailing service: Renault-Nissan is also planning to do that with its Alliance, which adds in Mitsubishi now for this plan.

6. Facebook sets up AI shop in Montreal

All the big tech companies come to my country for top AI talent. Basically because we have the founding academics in the field, which leads to a good student graduate pipeline.
