Uber's CEO steps back. It's The Daily Crunch.

THE DAILY CRUNCH
WEDNESDAY, JUNE 14 2017 By Darrell Etherington

Uber's CEO steps back, senior leadership to split his duties while they work to implement the recommendations of the Holder report. All that and more in The Daily Crunch for June 14, 2017.

1. Uber's Travis Kalanick steps back

Uber's founding CEO Travis Kalanick is taking a leave of absence, for a period of time that's still TBD. He's not getting a temporary replacement CEO, however – instead the company will be run by his direct reports.

Kalanick's decision is due to the tragic death of his mother last month, he says in the letter, but whenever he does return he'll also come back with lesser responsibilities, as recommended by former AG Eric Holder in his report to Uber's board.

2. Uber's Board shares Holder's recommendations

The recommendations made by Holder were shared with Uber on Tuesday, and they included 10 suggestions about how to change the company to address its cultural issues, which resulted in part in the alleged harassment of former employee Susan Fowler. The recommendations include things like equal family leave time for both men and women, and free dinner severed earlier than the current 7 PM time to help encourage employees to, you know, actually leave the office sometimes.

3. Uber board member David Bonderman makes a sexist remark, leaves board

Not an Onion headline: Uber board member David Bonderman made a sexist remark at the meeting in which the company was receiving the news about what it should do to be less sexist. Understandably, he resigned shortly thereafter.

4. Shadow raises $57 million for beefier gaming via the cloud

Another decade, another cloud gaming service. Shadow will follow OnLive and others in attempting to bring high-power gaming to more lightweight devices. The tech might be in the right spot at this time, but big players like Nvidia and Sony are already working on this, too.

5. Instagram tests new sponsor post flag

Instagram has a new way to make it very clear what posts are sponsored in celebrity and influencer feeds. There's a "Paid partnership" label right under the poster's name in this test, and it looks like it should be good all around for transparency and making sure people follow the letter of requirements around these.

6. Element AI raises $102 million

Did you ever doubt that AI was a hot investment target? Element AI, a Montreal-based AI platform and incubator for startups has raised $102 million. It has some heavyweight talent on board with leading AI academic Yoshua Bengio, which is likely to have helped considerably in drawing in that funding.

7. What we think about the Xbox One X after playing with one

We used the Xbox One X, playing a variety of games on the new console. Read on to find out if it's worth the pricey upgrade, or if it's worth switching if you're already on PS4 Pro.
