Disrupt NY is happening as you read this, Uber and Waymo and Lyft all tango in autonomous driving and WannaCry prompts wailing against security agencies. All that and more in The Daily Crunch for May 15, 2017. 1. TechCrunch Disrupt NY 2017 is underway This week is TechCrunch Disrupt NY 2017, so obviously that's the biggest news there is. We're here at Pier 36 in Manhattan (come say 'Hi') and we kicked the day off strong with Derek Jeter talking about The Player's Tribune. There's also Battlefield, which pits startups against one another in a virtual arena for cred and actual funding. Plus, you can watch it all live right here, with the complete competition and editorial events streamed throughout. How disruptive! 2. WannaCry has everyone scrambling The big ransomware hack dubbed 'WannaCry' has been the top story of the weekend, and it's prompted fast follow reactions from big companies involved including Microsoft, which was quick to point the finger to government agencies that hoard vulnerabilities that could otherwise be patched. 3. Waymo and Lyft pair up for self-driving Uber is in court with Waymo, but its rival Lyft is on much friendlier terms with the former Google self-driving car program. Lyft and Waymo are partnering on self-driving cars and fleet services, which could help both get out ahead of the embattled Uber – especially now that Uber's Anthony Levandowski is officially barred from working on LiDAR tech. 4. Google tweaks AdSense to boost transparency Google has made some changes to AdSense, spelling out exactly how it deals with violations of its content policies and removes ads from websites. This comes alongside changes that allow Google to pull ads from just individual pages with offending content, instead of from entire websites all at once. 5. Here's how Lucid thinks about making electric cars Drive or be driven? Why not both, says Lucid Motors, an electric car startup with Tesla in its sights and ride sharing on its mind. 6. WannaCry isn't over Hacks rarely die quick deaths, and WannaCry is no exception. Get ready for more. 7. Snapchat monetizes its new World Lenses and more Snap, Inc. is clearly hoping to use its growing stable of filter products to expand its available revenue routes. But will they lead to decent gains, or will they instead just retread old sponsored filter territory? |
